Fort Morgan State Historic Park, Gulf Shores

Alabama Gulf Coast, Fort Morgan

Fort Morgan State Historic Park on the Alabama Gulf Coast is located on the Fort Morgan Peninsula near Gulf  Shores Alabama and preserves the battle-scarred remains of an important coastal fort. In fact, Mobile Point where the fort stands is one of the most historic sites in Alabama. An earlier fort named Fort Bowyer was built here in 1813 and was the scene of two important battles of the War of 1812.

Construction on Fort Morgan began in 1819 and was completed in 1834, the fort remained active during four wars - the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World Wars I and II. Fort Morgan is most famous for its role in the Civil War Battle of Mobile Bay. Union Admiral David Farragut damned the torpedoes and went full speed ahead to win the battle. The massive fort contains over 40 million bricks and pays tribute to the skilled masons that constructed the facility. Fort Morgan is a historic masonry star fort at the mouth of Mobile Bay, some scholars regard it as "one of the finest examples of military architecture in the New World."

Since 1834 Fort Morgan, a National Historic Landmark, has stood guard of Mobile Bay; the Fort Morgan Peninsula is conveniently located 22 miles west of Gulf Shores on the Alabama Coast and is a perfect morning or afternoon excursion for visitors to the area.
