The Gulf Coast is for more than suntans & beaches, the area also offers a special sanctuary for migratory birds, nesting sea turtles & even endangered Alabama beach mouse. The Bon Secour (meaning safe haven in French) National Wildlife Refuge may be small compared to other national wildlife refuges, but it attracts more than 100,000 visitors each year!
Whereabouts 7000 acres provides a variety of habitats where you can discover unique flora & fauna, including more than three hundred species of birds. The refuge offers free guided tours including a Bird Walk for both beginners & experienced bird watchers. On the Dynamic Dunes tour, discover more about the dunes & beach habitat. The Nature Walk tour includes general information about the plants, history & wildlife found in the reserve. These free tours require a reservation, so be sure to register.
Not interested in a tour? You can choose between several paths that extend from a mile more than 4 miles. These trails are open 7 days a week.
